FEAST DAYS
December 9 - St. Juan Diego
December 12 - Our Lady of Guadalupe
A miracle took place nearly 500 years ago in Mexico, where most of the people of the time wanted nothing to do with Jesus. A poor Aztec farmer, Juan Diego, was one of the few who embraced Jesus. He was walking to Mass one morning in December when the Blessed Mother appeared to him on Tepeyac Hill. She asked Juan to tell the bishop to build a chapel there in her honor.
Juan did what Mary told him, but the bishop was doubtful and asked for proof. A few days later, Mary reappeared to Juan and filled his cloak with roses. She told him to take them to the bishop. When Juan opened his cloak for the bishop, there on his rough-fibered tilma was a beautiful image of Mary, dressed as an Aztec princess. She is called Our Lady of Guadalupe.
This miracle, which occurred in 1531, was so impressive that within ten years, eight million people embraced Jesus and became Catholic. This is the largest conversion in the history of the world! The tilma remains in near-perfect condition despite a bombing, an acid spill, and exposure to incense, candle wax, and soot. It is displayed in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.
